WHAT EVERYONE OUGHT TO KNOW ABOUT SOLO TRAVEL AND EXPLORING THE WORLD INDEPENDENTLY

Embarking on a solo journey as a jet setter can be an exhilarating and transformative as well as a daunting experience/undertaking, but it requires careful planning and a mindful approach. Whether you're a seasoned solo traveller or about to embark on your first adventure, these tips can help ensure a stress-free and enjoyable solo travel experience.

Research

Thorough research is the foundation of a successful solo trip. Before jetting off to a new destination, familiarise yourself with the local culture, customs, and any potential safety concerns. Knowing the basics of the language spoken in the area can also go a long way in facilitating communication and navigating your way around. Thanks to the beauty of worldwide connectivity, the internet can allow you to do your research and make key notes ahead of time. Plus, with social media, you can always reach out to locals for some advice.

Accommodation

One of the key aspects of solo travel is accommodation. Opt for centrally located and well-reviewed hotels or hostels, especially if you're exploring a new city. Safety and convenience should be top priorities. Many solo travellers also find that staying in accommodations with communal spaces, such as hostels or boutique guesthouses, provides opportunities to meet like-minded individuals and share experiences.

Pack light

Pack light and efficiently. Choose versatile clothing items that can be mixed and matched, and don't forget essentials like a universal power adapter, a portable charger, and any necessary medications. Seasoned travellers recommend a backpack over a suitcase where the key is packing light – not packing for every imagined eventuality. Wear any heavy, bulky items like coats and jackets and pack heavy items in the bottom of your bag. A well-organised backpack or suitcase can make moving from one destination to another much smoother.

Don't pack valuables or your cards in your back in case of pickpockets. Put cash, debit cards, and credit cards in your pockets and keep track of them. Keep electronics in your carry-on with you at all times (if taking flights).

Another quick tip is to pack a travel sim to avoid data minefields. The last thing you want is to go home to hundreds of pounds worth of roaming fees and other unexpected phone charges!

Unplug

Stay connected, but not overly so. While staying in touch with family and friends is crucial, resist the temptation to be plugged in constantly. Use your phone for navigation, translation, and emergencies, but take breaks from social media to fully immerse yourself in the present moment and your surroundings. Engaging with locals and fellow travellers without distractions can lead to more authentic and enriching experiences. We recently wrote about digital detoxes.

Explore freedom

Plan but leave room for spontaneity. Having a rough itinerary is wise, but be open to unexpected opportunities. Solo travel allows for unparalleled freedom, so take advantage of it. If a local recommends a hidden gem or invites you to join in a cultural event, be flexible enough to adjust your plans and seize the moment.

Safety

Safety is paramount for solo travellers. Share your itinerary with someone you trust, keep copies of important documents, and be vigilant about your surroundings. Trust your instincts, and if a situation feels uncomfortable, remove yourself from it and be scam-aware. Stay in well-traveled areas, especially at night, and be aware of local customs to avoid unintentional disrespect.

Connect

Connect with fellow travellers and locals. Solo travel doesn't mean isolation; in fact, it often leads to more social interactions. Join group tours, participate in activities, or use social platforms to meet other solo travellers in the area. There are dedicated websites for meeting travel buddies.

Sharing experiences and making connections can enhance your journey and create lasting memories but you should always exercise caution and keep your loved ones informed of where you are and who you are with.

The takeaways

Whilst solo travel can be intimidating and scary, it can lead to self-discovery and let you see the world with an open mind. Plan carefully and be safe but allow the beauty of the experience to take you to unexpected places, cultivating a treasure trove of unforgettable memories.
