Known as “The Body Coach” – and probably lockdown saviour to some parents – personal trainer and fitness guru Joe Wicks is known for creating accessible and free high-intensity interval training (HIIT) workouts and cookbooks with recipes for 15-minute meals that have transformed many of his followers’ lives and bodies.
In 2020, he began “PE with Joe” on his YouTube channel helping parents and children stay active in their living rooms with no gym equipment needed during the first Covid-19 lockdown. He inadvertently set a Guinness World Record for “most viewers for a fitness workout live stream on YouTube” in March 2020 for his second live stream, garnering over 950,000 viewers.
So, here are nine reasons why we Britons love Joe Wicks.
#1 Joe Wicks’s Instagram
With over 4.4 million followers on Instagram, you can see Joe’s posts and stories for inspiration. He posts lifestyle content, quick recipes, workout inspo, inspiring stories of those who have lost weight using his programmes, cute videos and pictures of his children and wife, his travels, his charity work, and lots more. His content is positive and inspiring.
#2 Joe Wicks’s YouTube channel
The Body Coach TV YouTube channel provides so much free content that you could probably work out for a year or more and not repeat a video. The channel has had over 300 million views and has 2.8 million subscribers. Joe has created everything from children’s workouts to workouts for elderly people to HIIT workouts for all different fitness levels. There are workouts that only last fifteen, twenty, twenty-five, and thirty minutes, ab blaster workouts, yoga, six-week challenges, workouts with equipment, leg workouts, low-impact workouts, beginner’s workouts, and so much more. It’s truly a wonderful resource for those on a budget and who are short on time and space. Between the workouts and the recipes on the channel, you could easily create your own ninety-day programme and lose weight without a penny spent!
Joe also had the number one trending video on YouTube in 2020 and 2021 and topped the YouTube charts as breakout creator of the year. During the pandemic, Joe’s “PE with Joe” videos were so popular that he announced on his Instagram that he’d donate the profits of the videos to the NHS and he raised half a million.
#3 Joe Wicks’s recipe books
Joe has published no fewer than eleven recipe books and has sold over 3.2 million books. He has a series of three Lean in 15 books that demonstrate how to make healthy meals in fifteen minutes and he later expanded that range to vegetarian versions, fat loss plans, baby meals, family meals, feel-good recipes, and 30-minute meals. Here are some of the Lean in 15 titles.
- Lean in 15 – The Shift Plan: 15 Minute Meals and Workouts to Keep You Lean and Healthy
- Lean in 15 – The Shape Plan: 15 Minute Meals With Workouts to Build a Strong, Lean Body
- Lean in 15 – The Sustain Plan: 15 Minute Meals and Workouts to Get You Lean for Life
- Veggie Lean in 15: 15-minute Veggie Meals with Workouts
- Veggie BBQ: 10 Brand-new Lean in 15 Recipes
There’s a reason Joe’s cookbooks are so popular: they are inexpensive, they provide great quick recipes, and they have thousands of five-star reviews. Sometimes you don’t want to jump on the bandwagon because popularity is trite but in this case, it’s worth checking out his recipes.
I personally have tried his cookbooks and the meals in the Gousto box (where he’s teamed up with them to create healthy recipes on subscription) and they have all been surprisingly delicious, especially considering it’s “healthy” food with lots of nutrients and slow-burning carbs.
#4 Joe Wicks’s children’s book
At the end of 2021, Joe released a children’s book called The Burpee Bears. It’s a storybook and picture book packed with fitness tips for children, simple exercises, and healthy recipes. Many parents have raved about the book and how their children were engaged in the story and started getting into doing lunges and burpees! For many of you whose children prefer sedentary video games to sprinting, this book might be for you!
#5 Joe Wicks’s fitness and diet app
When the app was released, Joe reportedly made over £9 million in the first week alone with tens of thousands of subscribers. When released, the app was on sale for £69.99 for the annual subscription instead of the usual £89.99 price – or £14.99 per month. The app is an upgraded and easy-to-use version of Joe’s original 90-day plan (available here on his website for £67) but instead of only 90-days, you can stick to the plan for as long as you need. You choose recipes and workouts and track your progress in the app. On workout days, you’re allowed to eat a little more and the recipes are designed to provide nutrient-rich food without the need for calorie counting.
You get exclusive live workouts with Joe each week, workouts for all fitness levels, a meal plan, a planner, and a library of recipes and workouts to enjoy as often as you need. Each cycle lasts four weeks.
Based on the transformations Joe shares on his Instagram and his website’s transformations page, many people get excellent results from the app and the original 90-day plan.
#6 Joe Wicks’s charity efforts
In November 2020, Joe raised over £2 million for Children in Need by completing a 24-hour workout challenge. For his efforts, Blue Peter awarded him a Blue Peter Badge to say thank you on behalf of the charity.
In June 2021, Joe became a patron of The Amber Foundation, a youth homeless charity. This cause is dear to Joe’s heart because his mother, who was a social worker, started to work with some of the site’s residents near Dorking in Surrey and Joe has visited the centre on numerous occasions, donating fitness equipment, and giving advice on fitness and nutrition.
#7 Joe Wicks’s MBE
In October 2020, Joe was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for “services to Fitness and charity in the UK and abroad particularly during Covid-19” during the Queen’s 2020 Birthday Honours, which were supposed to take place in June but were delayed due to the pandemic. We, of course, think he’s most deserving of such an honour!
#8 Joe Wicks’s love of sweets
As healthy and fit as Joe is, if you follow his social media, you’ll see Joe has a love of all things sweet (like many of us), which makes him more relatable and human! Joe was seen eating The Chocolate Smith’s chocolate bar on his Instagram and luckily for the business, the business has boomed so much they’ve expanded twice! But what makes him even more human is how he admitted to gaining weight after a little overindulgence (how many of us can relate?) and how he lost the weight again using his body coach techniques and eating healthily.
#9 Joe Wicks’s wife and children
If you’re a follower of Joe’s social media, you’ll see him post videos with his two children Indie and Marley – and occasionally his beautiful wife Rosie, who is pregnant with baby number three. Joe seems to be totally hands-on with his children, even during some of his “PE with Joe” routines on his YouTube channel.
A little about how Joe Wicks got started
Joe graduated with a degree in sports science and he worked as a teaching assistant before transitioning into becoming a personal trainer. In 2014, he wanted to reach more people so he began posting videos of his workouts and nutrition advice on Instagram, amassing a following. Then, after becoming more popular, he published his first book in 2015 which became one of the bestselling diet books of all time. But despite raking in the millions now and making it look easy, Joe explains how his journey wasn’t as easy or as simple as it looks. He explains in this YouTube video all about his road to success.
Whether you love Joe or are indifferent, there’s a reason he’s so popular – it’s his charm, his positive energy, and his inspiration. Let us know on our social media what Joe Wicks moment is your favourite.
