Our History
Tria Beauty is born
The inventors of the LightSheer™, the gold standard for in-clinic laser hair removal provided by physicians, start Tria Beauty (formerly known as SpectraGenics).
Their goal: to transform the LightSheer (which weighed in at a whopping 120 pounds and cost $100,000) into a handheld laser small and easy enough for at-home use, and capable of delivering the same permanent results.

Kevin J. Appelbaum
President and CEOKevin has served as Tria Beauty's President & CEO since 2008. He has led the Company through a period of transition and explosive growth, from early technology and clinical stage product development into global commercial operations and revenue generation across a portfolio of regulated and unregulated products. Kevin's prior industry experience spans luxury goods, specialty retail, eCommerce and branded consumer products with companies including Procter & Gamble, PepsiCo and Sephora (an LVMH company). As a management consultant, he worked with a variety for Fortune 100 clients to unlock growth opportunities through new business development, corporate venturing and commercial innovation.
Kevin currently serves on the board of directors of ConsumerMed.org, an industry association focused on fostering innovation, education and entrepreneurship at the intersection of traditional consumer and healthcare industries, and previously served on the board of directors and compensation committee of Ventus Medical, Inc., a medical device company creating innovative therapies for the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea.
Prior to beginning his business career, Kevin served as an infantry officer and platoon commander in the US Army Rangers during peacetime and combat assignments, and served a 16-month tour of duty on the DMZ between North and South Korea. Kevin earned his bachelors degree in chemical engineering from the University of Pennsylvania, which he attended on an Army ROTC scholarship. He was an active member in the Young President's Organization from 1999 - 2012.
Tobin C. Island, Ph.D.
Co-Founder, Chief Operating OfficerAs one of three scientific co-founders of Tria Beauty, Dr. Island has led research & development, clinical & regulatory affairs, and all supply chain functions since the company’s formation.
As Senior Director of Operations at Lumenis, Ltd., Dr. Island was a co-inventor of LightSheer™, the first commercially successful, professional laser for hair removal, which set the industry standard for reliability and design and has generated more than $300 million in sales. He began his career at Star Medical, where he led the research and development of a novel laser-based imaging system for the diagnosis of skin burns.
Dr. Island earned his Ph.D., M.S., and B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Stanford University. He has published multiple scientific papers, holds six U.S. patents and 18 patent applications, and is a member of the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery.
Danika Harrison
Senior Vice President, Direct Marketing & InnovationDanika leads Direct Marketing and Innovation for Tria Beauty, including overseeing the company's global direct-to-consumer initiatives across eCommerce, CRM, social and mobile marketing and serving as the primary commercial leader for product innovation. Danika also leads consumer and market research to gain necessary insights to ensure effective and engaging experiences across consumer touchpoints. Danika brings 15+ years of digital marketing expertise and a passion for consumer insights to the Tria Beauty team.
Prior to joining Tria Beauty, she led the relationship marketing team and managed several top consumer packaged goods clients as a Partner at Rosetta, the largest independent digital agency in North America until its acquisition by Publicis for $575 million. During her tenure with Rosetta, she led client engagements with Dannon, Johnson's Baby, and Rogers to develop innovative marketing programs throughout the United States and Canada. She possesses cross-industry marketing experience, having built Pfizer's relationship marketing capability and having spent several years in financial services marketing at Bank of America and Merrill Lynch.
Danika earned an M.B.A. from Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University and graduated cum laude from Georgetown University with a B.S. in Business Administration.
Harvey Liu, Ph.D.
Senior Vice President, EngineeringDr. Liu leads Tria Beauty's research and development efforts and oversees a team of scientists and engineers that span multiple disciplines including optical physics and mechanical, electrical and software engineering. He was a key member of the engineering team that created the first Tria Hair Removal Laser and Skin Perfecting Blue Light device for treating acne and provides senior engineering leadership to the company’s innovation pipeline.
Prior to joining Tria Beauty, Dr. Liu served as Senior Systems Test Engineer at Carl Zeiss Meditec, Inc. and was responsible for optical coherence tomography (OCT) product development. During his tenure at Star Medical, Coherent Medical Group, and Lumenis Ltd., Dr. Liu contributed to the development of several key cosmetic laser and UV treatment products including LightSheer™, BClear™ and ReLume™.
Dr. Liu earned a Ph.D. in semiconductor device research from Stanford University and a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from the California Institute of Technology.
Tim Bunch
Vice President & General Manager, The Americas and EuropeTim joined Tria Beauty in January 2012 as the General Manager of North America. Tim's role has since expanded as the Vice President, General Manager of The Americas & Europe.
Prior to joining Tria Beauty, Tim spent 12 years at Procter & Gamble, managing businesses across the beauty and health care portfolios. Most recently, Tim served as the Global Business Leader for Doctor’s Dermatologic Formula (DDF), leading brand expansion into Europe and Asia. Tim also managed the North America Olay Anti-Aging business, launching the brand into new price tiers and premium equity.
Tim earned a B.S. in Chemical Engineering and Mathematics from Vanderbilt University.
Jiyoung Choi
Vice President & General Manager, Asia-PacificJiyoung served as Tria's Country Manager for Korea for 3 years before assuming her new role of Vice President & General Manager, Asia Pacific in 2013. Jiyoung's career spans 23 years, the first 12 of which were spent in advertising agencies culminating in Group Account Director at Welcomm-Publicis Worldwide where Jiyoung managed key accounts for leading consumer products brands including L'Oréal, Hewlett-Packard, Tefal and Club Med. Jiyoung then spent five years at CitiBank's Korea operation where she was Marketing Director for the company's Global Consumer Group. Google Korea then recruited Jiyoung where she held the position of Country Marketing Manager and was responsible for initiatives including launching YouTube, iGoogle, and several other core Google products to Korean consumers.
Jiyoung holds a B.A. in English Education from Korea University.
Kevin J. Appelbaum
President and CEO, Tria BeautyKevin has served as Tria Beauty's President & CEO since 2008. For more than 20 years, as both an operating executive and strategic advisor, he has driven companies at every stage of development. Since 2001, Kevin has focused on developing innovative products, services, and business models at the intersection of traditional healthcare and consumer industries.
Kevin also serves on the board of directors at Ventus Medical, a company that creates novel medical devices for the treatment of sleep disordered breathing.
Kevin's prior operating experience includes executive positions with Sephora (part of the Paris-based LVMH Group), Procter & Gamble, PepsiCo, and as CEO of venture-backed e-retailer Tavolo, Inc. He also spent several years in management consulting as Managing Partner with Hawk Hill Advisors leading engagements focused on accelerating growth through new business innovation, and commercializing disruptive new products and services with clients including Procter & Gamble, Motorola, Bare Escentuals and AT&T Wireless, among others.
Kevin earned a Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania. He began his career as an Army infantry and special operations (Ranger) officer and served tours of duty during peacetime and combat assignments. He has been an active member of the Young Presidents' Organization since 1999.
Albert Cha, M.D., Ph.D.
Managing Partner, Vivo VenturesAlbert is a Managing Partner who invests in private and public biopharmaceutical and medical device companies. He draws on extensive scientific, medical, and operating experience when working with his portfolio companies.
Albert was an early investor in Aspreva Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: ASPV, acquired by Galenica), Bioform Medical (BFRM, acquired by Merz), Vicept Therapeutics (acquired by Allergan), and Biodel (BIOD). Other investments include Acura Pharmaceuticals (ACUR), AMAG Pharmaceuticals (AMAG), and Avanir Pharmaceuticals (AVNR). He currently serves on the board of several private biopharmaceutical and medical device companies. Albert has also served as co-founder of several portfolio companies. Prior to joining Vivo Ventures, Albert worked at Oracle Corporation in pharmaceutical consulting and at the Palo Alto VA Hospital as a biomedical engineer.
Albert received his B.S. and M.S. in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University. He subsequently completed the Medical Scientist Training Programme at UCLA School of Medicine, where he received his M.D. and Ph.D. in Neuroscience. During his studies, he was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha and won the prestigious Outstanding Graduate Student Award. His research in molecular biophysics has been published in highly respected journals such as Nature and Neuron.
Steve A. Elms
Managing Partner, Aisling CapitalSteve joined Aisling Capital in mid-2000 and currently serves as a Managing Partner. Previously, he was a Principal in the Life Sciences Investment Banking Group of Hambrecht & Quist (H & Q). During his five years at H & Q, Steve was involved in over 60 financing and M&A transactions, helping clients raise in excess of $3.3 billion in capital. Prior to H & Q, he traded mortgage-backed securities at Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette. His previous healthcare sector experience includes over two years as a pharmaceutical sales representative for Marion Laboratories and two years as a consultant for The Wilkerson Group. Steve currently serves as a director of Pernix Therapeutics, Inc. (AMEX: PTX) and a number of private companies.
Steve earned an M.B.A. from the Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University and a B.A. in Human Biology from Stanford University.
Jim Glasheen, Ph.D.
General Partner, Technology PartnersJim has been with Technology Partners since 2002. He leads the firm's efforts in Consumer Medicine, investing in both medical device and biopharmaceutical companies.
Jim serves on the boards of Elcelyx Therapeutics, Essentialis, Incline Therapeutics, Medley Health, Revance Therapeutics, Transcend Medical, and Tria Beauty, while also having led Technology Partner's investment in two companies that have since gone public: Iomai (IOMI) and Cadence Pharmaceuticals (CADX). Jim is also an advisor to the Lester Center at the University of California, Berkeley and the National Science Foundation (NSF) in Washington, DC.
Previously, Jim was Managing Director at CIT Venture Capital, leading the Group's effort in Life Science investing. Also, he was a leader within McKinsey & Company's Pharmaceutical and Medical Products Practice.
Jim earned a B.S. from Duke University and an M.A. and Ph.D. in Biology from Harvard University. He was a Deutsche Akademische Austauschdienst (DAAD) fellow at Universitaet des Saarlandes, Germany and a post-doctoral fellow at the University of California, Berkeley. Jim has published several research papers and has had his research highlighted in major media outlets, including: Nature, The New York Times, Scientific American, and CNN.
David Mauney, M.D.
Managing Director, De Novo VenturesDavid is one of the co-founders of De Novo Ventures, a distinguished healthcare investment firm. Prior to co-founding De Novo, David was a Partner at Asset Management Company (AMC), where he worked with Pitch Johnson as the lead partner in healthcare investments. At AMC, he led seed and early stage investments in TriVascular (acquired by Boston Scientific), Novare Surgical Systems (licensed to Johnson & Johnson), Enteric Medical Technologies (acquired by Boston Scientific), and participated in seven financings of technology companies.
David was the first employee and Director of Business Development for Fox Hollow Technologies (Nasdaq: EVVV) and worked in product management for Heartport (acquired by Johnson & Johnson). David sits on the boards of Articulinx, ProMed, Simpirica, Tria Beauty, and Ventus Medical. He also represented De Novo on investments in CyroVascular and Lumend.
David earned an M.D. from Dartmouth Medical School and a B.A. from Duke University.
Michael J. Valentino
Independent DirectorMichael has spent 30+ years as a healthcare industry executive. He built the start-up Adams Respiratory Therapeutics into a fully integrated specialty pharmaceutical company with more than $400 million in annual revenue. Adams completed its initial public offering (IPO) in July 2005, which was ranked by The Wall Street Journal as the No. 1 Health Care IPO in 2005. In 2007, Reckitt Benckiser, a world leader in household products, acquired Adams for $2.3 billion.
Michael served as President, CEO, and Chairman of the Board of Directors for Xanodyne Pharmaceuticals, Inc., and President and Chief Operating Officer at Alpharma, Inc., a leading global generic pharmaceutical company. Additionally, he served as Executive Vice President, Global Head Consumer Pharmaceuticals for Novartis, President and Chief Operating Officer of Novartis Consumer Healthcare, North America, and President of Pharmacia & Upjohn's Consumer Products.
Edward W. Unkart
Independent DirectorEdward was appointed to the Board of Tria Beauty in February 2011 and chairs the audit committee. Since January 2009, he has been an independent consultant. From January 2005 to December 2008, he served as Vice President of Finance and Administration, Chief Financial Officer, and Assistant Secretary of SurgRx, Inc., which was acquired by Johnson & Johnson in October 2008. From May 2001 until May 2004, Edward served as Vice President of Finance and Administration, Chief Financial Officer, and Assistant Secretary of Novacept, which was acquired by Cytyc Corporation in March 2004. In addition to Tria Beauty, Edward currently serves on the board of directors and chairs the audit committee of AlterG, Inc., a privately held medical device company.
Edward is a Certified Public Accountant and holds a B.S. in Statistics and an M.B.A. from Stanford University.

("Radiancy") and Oregon Aesthetic Technologies, Inc. ("OAT") in the United States District Court for the Northern District of California. The lawsuits seek relief from Radiancy's and OAT's ongoing campaigns of false and misleading advertising and other unfair competitive practices related to their respective no!no! hair removal and ANSR:BEAM devices. The suits seek injunctions and damages in connection with their claims.
